PINK ANGEL'S TRUMPET FLOWERS: A COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS
76
brugmansia
Among the many flowering plants that I have purchased and attempted to grow and maintain, my favorite by far has been the Angel’s Trumpet plant (brugmansia).
The following is a collection of photographs that display the beauty and drama that is the Angel's trumpet flower. All were taking by me in my back yard. The majority were taken in the last few weeks but some were taken last year around this same time.
trumpet buds-The buds start out tiny and quickly grow, elongate and hang down.
.
I first laid eyes on this plant about 2 years ago at the local nursery and have since been captivated by its beauty and presence.
It was a challenge at first, it only had two flowers when I purchased it and I was a bit inpatient and uninformed about the care and progression of it.
I since have learned about the care and needs of it and have enjoyed its multiple blossoms that are large and dramatic and fragrant in the evening.
I purchased a second plant last year and are thinking of adding a third to my collection.
the drama begins- After a week or so, the drama begins and the flower begins to emerge from within the bud...
My two plants both have pink flowers, but Angel's trumpet are available in different colors. The colors range from white to shades of pink, yellow and purple.
I grow both of my plants in containers as I do most of my plants but you can certainly plant yours in the ground. They grow larger when planted in the ground.
An advantage of planting them in a container is the ability to move them to different spots in your garden.
I have read that Angel's trumpets can be quite poisonous and have been used by teenagers for its hallucinogenic properties often with fatal effects.
It's recommended that they not be grown around children and pets and it is adviced that you wash your hands after handling this plant.
I have never attempted to smoke it or drink a tea made from my Angel's trumpet plant or is flowers and my pets have never really been interested in them, so I'm not sure how true or to what degree they are poisonous.
color transformation- Fully emerged, the flower is at first a creamy white color and within about a day turns to pink.
To keep my plants happy, I water them daily in the hot days here in South Florida and fertilize them often.
I've had them in different locations and they enjoy both full sun and partial shade.
Watching them grow and caring for this plants has been enjoyable and rewarding.
Photographing them from the first tiny bud and through it’s dramatic transformation to the large strikingly beautiful flower has been just amazing!
pretty in pink- The final look of this beautiful flower is a striking, pink hanging trumpet. This beautiful flower lasts about a week in full bloom.
I hope that you have enjoyed this collection of photographs and consider adding this beautiful plant with it's angelic flowers to your garden.
Some more facts about this beautiful flowering plant:
-it belongs to the solanaceae family (nightshade), which also includes tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco, and many kinds of peppers.
-is native to South American countries including my birth country, Colombia.
-althought it looks like a tree, it’s actually a flowering bush.
-its flowers are fragrant in the evening
-it can be grown in full sun or partial shade, and it likes plenty of water and fertilizer
-colors range from white to shades of pink, shades of yellow and shades of purple
addendum
Fellow hubber, Pixel-Alchemist brought to my attention the following information regarding the Angel's trumpet poisonous capabilities... I'm very grateful to him and decided to add this information to this hub:
This family of plant has levels of Entheogens in it, which are used for medicines, and are known to have psychedelic proprieties. However they also have high concentrations of alkaloids, which are toxicans, which are found concentrated within the flowers, hence why those that attempt to gain a "high" from smoking or drinking tea made from the flowers or seeds more often end up being extremely ill or worst case situation result in death. As the concentration, balance, of the alkaloids and the desired Entheogens depend on where and how it is grown. Also one only needs a small amount of the alkaloids for the ill effects to take effect while a greater amount of the Entheogens are required for the psychedelic effects to take effect. So using this spices of plant to get a "high" is akin to playing Russian roulette with the greater chance of the bullet being in the chamber.

Manny,
I've never seen a brugmansia in so many amazing stages of bloom- some look almost alien. The spiral star shape is a very rare view.
You've got quite an eye. What a pleasure it is to look at your hub!
A great Photographic essay on the Angel Flower.Wonderfully written and helpful to any that would like their own angel plant.
In reference to its use as a recreational drug. This family of plant has levels of Entheogens in it, which are used for medicines, and are known to have psychedelic proprieties. Great article love the photographs
I have never seen close ups of this amazing flower, I have only seen them in a distance. No wonder you enjoy growing them, they are simply amazing!!! The transformation really is dramatic as you say, I love the way it looks through the different stages of emerging from its bud..almost spider-like! And the end result, that gorgeous pink flower is just incredible! Thank you so much for sharing these amazing pictures. There is nothing more beautiful than nature.
Stunning photography! I remember some years back here in central Florida hearing it on the news that teens were smoking or drinking tea made of angel trumpet with lethal effects...advising people to get rid of them...Thank you for including that info in your hub. They are, indeed, beautiful, but not for ingestion!
Hello Manny, Well, I like how you showed the progression from a bud to a full flower...We don't have them here in Michigan so it was treat to witness this. I certainly can understand why they are your favorite...they are absolutely beautiful and you did a great job of capturing them! They look like stars before they are fully open! Nature is grand isn't it! Good to see you again!
Manny-you are a remarkable photographer. Wow! I felt as if I was watching a slow moving video. You really captured the quality of the unfolding.
